Better Bean Company Giveaway

Better Bean Company Giveaway

THIS GIVEAWAY HAS CLOSED

As we swing through the first week of MoFo I’m happy to announce a great giveaway from The Better Bean Company! They first came to my attention at the Vida Vegan Conference and I’ve been loving their products ever since.

better bean giveawayThe Better Bean Company currently offers five different flavors of pre-seasoned, ready to eat beans. The uncanny refried black beans are great to heat and spread on a tortilla with toppings to make tacos or roll up a burrito. Any of the five are excellent to take on a camping trip for a quick and easy protein, especially if you’re using the three sisters chili on a fire baked potato.

If you head over to their website, Better Bean has a whole page with recipes using their beans as the main ingredient. Cook up some delectable chili cheese fries or a black bean pumpkin bake for fall. They even have some dessert recipes, like black bean brownies.

The Better Bean Company is offering a coupon for a free container of beans to 5 different readers today. To enter, you just need to leave a comment below about which of the Better Bean beans you’re looking forward to trying the most. We’ll select five winners at 8 am PDT on September 6. This giveaway is open to US and Canada residents. You’ve got 24 hours to enter! One entry per person please.

Earth Balance Snacks and Mac and Cheese Giveaway

THIS GIVEAWAY HAS CLOSED

Welcome, welcome! We are thrilled to kick off Vegan MoFo 2014 with our first giveaway of the year! EarthBalanceLogo

The vegan blogosphere has been abuzz all summer with the new products coming out from Earth Balance. Many vegan bakers have relied on their baking sticks for years but in the past year Earth Balance has been releasing a line of popcorn, chips, and crackers that are garnering a lot of attention.

Retailers couldn’t keep their Vegan Cheddar Squares in stock and the Sour Cream and Onion and Cheddar Flavor Kettle Chips have been huge (and delicious) hits.  The release of their new line of boxed mac and cheeses were an internet sensation just a couple of months ago.

r1-EARTH-053-MacandCheese-Vegan-1Available in both cheddar and white cheddar, vegan forums and chats were trading tips on which stores had them in stock and online retailers were selling out. We know these still aren’t available locally for everyone so Earth Balance has generously agreed to giveaway a grand prize box of snacks and a box of each flavor of their mac and cheese to one lucky winner! We also have VIP coupons available for four more winners in this giveaway.

A Little of This & A Little of That: Tuesday MoFo RoundUp

A Little of This & A Little of That: Tuesday MoFo RoundUp

I do declare that the seventh annual Vegan Month of Foods is off with a bang! It’s another warm day for Portland, OR and it’s got me thinking salad, cold cider, and well, someone else making my dinner. Namely, a little from each of these postings that caught my eye, thanks to spending a little too much time on the RandoMoFo generator throughout the day.

First things first, some breakfast for dinner with the Adventure Time BACON PANCAKES (that yes, call for caps locks and a catchy little autotune jam) from Paula’s amazing Tree Trunks’ Kitchen project…

Moving on to an epic & Vegan French Quarter Muffalatta Sandwich from the Miss Kitchen Witch blog

And I’m constantly digging Hipster Food’s style (and offerings!). This time, it’s a bruschetta-style play on a fried egg.

Adorable Hamantashen Cupcakes with apricot jam for Purim, thanks to Cupcakery Adventures

With a side of Three B Salad over at Grating for Godot

I like this set up.

Despite the heat I will gladly take a bowl of this In Love with Garlic soup from the folks at Fig and Basil. Make that two and a round of toast.

Add a Bee-yooo-tee-ful Eggplant Lasagna with Cashew Cheese from Luminous Vegans

But let me be honest with myself, and everyone reading this. Since my trip to Austin last winter, my heart made room for tacos, and all the talks and photos already of this Tacocleanse is driving me crazy. Here’s Smurfy’s explanatory post of what exactly is going on in Austin this month.

I mean, who’s not planning on making tacos this week now?!

Keep up the tasty work, MoFos!

Your Monday Fun Time Round Up!

Your Monday Fun Time Round Up!

It’s my final round up o’ fun today and I wanted to post a big pile of sweets. Happy MoFo and Happy Halloween everyone!

Killer Bunnies whipped up some delectable ginger spice almond oat chocolate chip cookies that look super good for cleaning out the odds and ends in your pantry.

Mama et de bebe hawk made some Speculoos cookie butter cups and y’all know how I feel about the Speculoos. I will be trying these soon.

I don’t read Dutch but I do recognize a sweet petit four when I see one. Fiekefatjerietjes has a delectable round up of classic sweets on the blog today.

And speaking of round ups, Tahinitoo has a whole post dedicated to cupcakes from yesterday.

And I can’t leave out Joanna Vaught who has done a whole month of holiday cookies. Sweet sweet eggnog from the Vegan Cookie Connoisseur.

Newman Improved gets a chocolate cinnamon scone all up in the xgfx zone. Ya gotta love a good scone.

And finally, Leaves and Flours baked up Halloween sugar cookies shaped like ghosts and cats. I love Halloween and I love sugar cookies. Check out her recipe linked in her post.

Tuesday Post-MoFo Round Up

Tuesday Post-MoFo Round Up

How is everyone enjoying post-MoFo life? Me, I’m a little wistful, so I’ve launched myself deep into the sanity threatening world of NaNoWriMo to distract myself from MoFo withdrawal. Which is not to say I haven’t whittled away plenty of valuable writing time surfing the vegan blogs. I bring you some of my favourites from this past week!

So I married a vegan catered for 75 lucky guests. On the menu? Winter soup shooters, golden lentil dumplings, hummus and muhammara, roasted sweet & spicy nuts and more.

More in parties, Bianca from Vegan Crunk attended a Heathen Housewarming! The food spread looks great, but I’d be all over this homemade Grave Hill Vineyard Swamp Cider.

Over at Bonzai Aphrodite, the adorable Thanksliving Coloring Zine by Nathalie VanBalen is reviewed. As the type of adult who stares at children colouring in restaurants with envy, I want a copy!

MoFo’s own Jess still owes me an exclusive email review of all of this amazing food at the new Native Foods in Portland.

Thanks to Hipster Food, I’m making mashed potatoes tonight.

Hannah Kaminsky does everything from taking incredible photos, creating the best sweet vegan recipes, and—a girl after my own heart—growing oyster mushrooms in her kitchen. With them she created these vegan Oyster Mushrooms Rockefeller (including a recipe!).

Also no slouch when it comes to food photography (understatement of the year), Celine from Have Cake Will Travel posted these Raspberry Sour Cream Mini Coffee Cakes. I’ll take three with a cup of afternoon tea.

Americans! You must make this pumpkin cheesecake with pecan crumble topping for Thanksgiving. Everyone else: Make it now. If you’re still waiting for your copy of Vegan Pie In The Sky to fall from the heavens into your hands, you’re in luck with this freebie recipe. (edit: I thought American Thanksgiving was this weekend. Sorry! So maybe you should all just make the pie tonight)

And since nothing can top that, have a happy Thanksgiving (US), a sombre Remembrance Day (Canada), and enjoy all those other holidays I’m too ignorant to know about.

MoFo Swan Song: Sunday Round-Up

MoFo Swan Song: Sunday Round-Up

On my last MoFo round-up, I just have to say that it has been an immense pleasure being involved this year. Not only did I blog regularly during MoFo for my first year, I also had the honour of writing some round-ups and giveaways with the superstar MoFo PPK team. This experience combined with my time at Vida Vegan Con just makes me want to smooch you all in the least creepy way possible. Okay, cheezefest over. Here’s today’s round-up!

Starting things off with a spooky bang: Ghoulish Shepherd’s Pie from Snarky Vegan. I am a lazypants these days and had a boring old Amy’s frozen shepherd’s pie last night, but my day would have been infinitely better if I’d been served this one.

I like planning my food-tourism far in advance, and on my list when I finally make my way out to visit my sister in Boston and reunite with New York City, I plan on tracking down The Cinnamon Snail vegan food truck. Apparently these award-winning vanilla bourbon crème brûlée donuts (!) are frequently available when the Snail is in NYC.

I’m always sad about the fact that more people think they don’t love tempeh. Aside from the initial un-sexiness of “fermented bean curd,” what’s not to love? Check out this excellent tempeh primer and resultant balls of fermenty goodness from The Vegan Weight Watcher. Bonus: the tempeh wingz from MoFo’s own Katie are also recommended, and I can vouch for their deliciousness.

I’m obsessed with Colorado and I don’t know why! Okay, it’s probably the mountains, but it’s also the vegan-friendliness, exemplified by this vegan buffalo chicken roll from Sun Deli in Boulder. Once I embarked on an entire trip to visit a university in Boulder even though I was 99% sure I wasn’t going to go to grad school there. I wish I’d had Vegan Coloradical as my tour guide.

You’ve no doubt already experienced jealousy and resentment over those of us lucky enough to be testing for Terry Hope Romero‘s upcoming world food cookbook. I haven’t found near enough time to delve into testing, but I did spend a good few minutes salivating over this Tofu Bo Bun tester from Living Free. Veganized Vietnamese food is amazing!

Vegan Chai (sorry, vegan chai) hates capital letters AND tomatoes, but we’ll forgive her when she serves up this amazing TLT (sorry, tlt).

As she is also part of the MoFo team (and a special friend of mine), I couldn’t end my round-ups without gushing about Amey‘s MoFo theme: a spice a day! Today’s dried rose petals resulted in this gorgeous rose petal & almond tea, in a Tin-Tin mug!

For dessert, and leaning into tomorrow’s holiday (and the final day of MoFo 2011), feast your eyes on these lovely ghost sugar cookies.

Happy Halloween!

Sunday MoFo Round-Up: I Want It All

Sunday MoFo Round-Up: I Want It All

Greetings, MoFos. Sundays are lovely. I’ve made waffles and raked leaves, and we drove out to one of the last island farmers’ markets of the year. There is a big sheepdog to my right and a nerdy boyfriend organizing his Magic The Gathering cards to my left. We are considering going to a pumpkin patch tomorrow. Basically, I’m all cozy and I hope you are too, because we are so close to finishing and conquering the wonderful Vegan Month of Food. Let’s take a look at what stood out today.

If you’ve been vegan for any length of time, you’ve probably already experienced the phenomenon that is cheese-less pizza appreciation. Suddenly, even the idea of putting Daiya on your pizza is kind of weird, considering how much it takes over the other ingredients’ flavours. I would happily eat up this caramelized onion and squash pizza from I Eat Grains any day.

What’s in Robin Robertson’s slow-cooker? should be a regular feature in the soon-to-be-a-reality vegan tabloids. Today, it’s seitan posole.

I am absolutely loving think. care. act.’s tour of veganized regional Germany. Today? Northern Germany’s intriguing Pears, Beans, and “Bacon”.

Gimme this breakfast.

WHAT! Dandies bars from Three and a Half Vegans. Homemade vegan chocolate bars in your pie hole.

I just started testing for Terry Hope Romero’s upcoming world vegan food cookbook, and it is absolutely amazing, since Viva Vegan is one of my favourite cookbooks of all time. Proving its awesomeness are these beautiful arepas sandwiching yellow chili grilled mushrooms and fruit slaw from Cupcake Kitteh.

No plans for this (or next) Sunday night? Take a cue from Amy Zucchini and throw yourself a sushi rollin’ party.

Have a marvellous week!

Sunday Feasting: A Round-Up of Dreams

Sunday Feasting: A Round-Up of Dreams

Hi guys, Gabrielle here. I’m starving. Give me all of your foods! No, seriously. My google reader has me seriously craving a dream feast made up of MoFoers’ recipes. Grab a snack and join me as we imagine-eat our way through this thing of beauty.

But! Before we proceed, make sure your nails are painted teal, okay? It’s crucial! It just happens to be National Feral Cat day. Don’t let the national thing turn you away, non-Americans, feral cats are everywhere, awareness is always a great thing, and your nails will be teal.

I think most vegans have made up a meal out of side dishes at a restaurant before, and to be honest, I don’t mind it one bit! Especially if something like this curry-roasted cauliflower from The Urban Vegan is on the menu.

That pretty little squash on my counter has its future determined: delicata squash circles.

Moving on to mains, the Crabby Crafter (adorable blog name!)’s green and white bean casserole with spicy sweet potato wedges looks just dazzling.

I have no self-control when it comes to Ethiopian food—injera gut be dammed. I would eat the hell out of this plate of Aussie-Ethiopian plate from Meet the Wikos.

Vegan MoFo’s own Luciana only ate half of this breakfast burrito! If I didn’t love her so much after meeting her at Vida Vegan Con, I would mock her dainty appetite (and inexplicable affinity for chia kombucha).

Next we’ll zip over to Stuttgart, Germany, where we will munch on these amazing Italian vegan gelato “conos” with Vegan Miam.

Forgetting my theme (if there ever was one) let’s get distracted by Jojo’s adorable Football Food Sunday (she’s a Brit who is watching American football! Hilarious!), featuring avocado fries, barbecue tofu, and loaded potato skins. Give me this spread for a (hockey) game any day.

Oh right, vegans eat salad! How about this gorgeously plated gnocchi potato salad with green beans and quinoa?

Everyone who knows me knows how much I love mushrooms—the more exotic the funghi the better. So I’m pretty stoked on Veg-am’s mushroom instalments for 1 food 5 ways: here is the herbed polenta cups with mushroom onion stuffing.

Finally, I will leave you as I pop a hundred of these peanut butter thumbprint cookies into my mouth from a Toronto farmers’ market via Until We Eat Again.

Chewy, Cheeky, Chesty Chia.

Chewy, Cheeky, Chesty Chia.

Are you surfin’ the chia wave yet?  I know lots of folks have been chewing on chia for years, but I only recently had my first chia pudding.  I dug it.  My lateness to the chia game is crazy, because I’m a big fan of wobbly, chewy things–especially in my beverages.  I am one of the biggest bubble tea cheerleaders, ever.  In the world.

Chia and tapioca shouldn’t really be compared, though.  They’re very different animals.  Or at least, my comparisons shouldn’t be taken too seriously…Boba/tapioca reminds me of candy and desserts, squishy boobs and the age-old adage, “CHEW BEFORE SWALLOW!” Chia, on the other hand is a much smaller and delicate choking concern and more reminiscent of frog eggs than breasts.  I’m not alone in this sentiment either, just read Vegtastic Voyage‘s hilarious experience with her first “chia in kombucha.”  Her story is replete with frog egg pictures, which I’ll be kind enough to leave off of my message today.

Chia is also an insane nutrition power-donkey, and if you get bored with eating it, you can spread it on objects around your house and grow it for novelty!  I wish bubble tea had the same virtues.

From left to rightL Raspberry Passion, Cranberry Lemonade, Cherry Lime and Blackberry Hibiscus

The generous folks at Mamma Chia heard about my recent chia conversion and were nice enough to send me coupons to try each of their four flavors.  These classy drinks are filled with organic juice, organic chia and a little bit of agave.  They’re super-healthy, refreshing, have a bit of protein (4g per serving), omega-3s, and they’re fun to eat or drink (you can’t really drink a beverage you need to chew, and you can’t really eat a drink–so that’s confusing).  After sampling each of these very scientifically in my test kitchen, my favorite flavor, far and away, was Cherry Lime.  It’s tastes like cherry jello and required considerable restraint from me and my lab partner  to keep from adding vodka straight into the bottle.

Mamma Chia wants to spread their chewy, healthy love with you, too. Today we’ll pick three winners;  each of you will win a coupon for a free bottle of Mamma Chia (you pick the flavor), plus another coupon for a buck off of two bottles.

To win, just comment with your best chia alliteration, write about your general love of chia, or if you have any experience incorporating chia with booze, tell me about that.  Winners will be chosen at midnight tonight–East Coast time, so that’s 9PM for you lefties.

The winners are alliteraters Emily comment #18, Candice comment #39 and Beth comment #51.  Please email veganmofoblog at gmail dot com and send us your addresses!

Monday Round-Up: Happy Vegan Thanksgiving, Canadians!

Monday Round-Up: Happy Vegan Thanksgiving, Canadians!

MoFos! I drive all of my American friends up the wall talking about Canadian Thanksgiving—one of my favourite holidays—but they’re just jealous that we don’t have to wait until November to get our Tofurky on. Since I’m currently embarking on an amazing and terrifying house-sitting gig in Victoria, BC, I’ll probably be having toast for dinner, so we can all be jealous of the following Canadian Thanksgiving dishes perfect for channelling your inner hoser.

While those of us out on the West Coast on getting reacquainted with our closest friend—the rain—lucky Nicole in sunny Southern Ontario is taking gorgeous outside shots of these birthday lemon tarts over at at A Dash of Compassion.

I’m a little out of sorts that my Thanksgiving weekend didn’t kick off with these perfect pumpkin waffles from you can’t eat the air!

Is there anything better than apple pie? Evidently, yes, there is apple pie CAKE.

Not only did Jennifer at It Ain’t Meat, Babe discuss vegan Thanksgiving celebrations with on Canada’s prestigious CBC radio, she also found the time to suggest we try her Sweet Potato Bread Pudding. I’ll take advice from anyone with Dylan-inspired blog name.

You’ve seen Bryanna Clark Grogan’s World Vegan Feast making its rounds around the MoFo-sphere, so clearly we knew BCG wouldn’t leave us hanging on Thanksgiving. Try her Mediterranean mashed potatoes, and don’t fret if you find yourself eating them straight out of the pot.

I’m patriotically practising my French by reading Vegan à Montréal, and we all know that Les Français are masters of the crêpe, but it looks as though the Québécois can also hold their own with a Swiss-style chickpea omelet.

Finally, MeShell, I am begging you to invite me to your Thanksgiving next year. Her spread includes cornbread muffins, onion gravy, smashed garlicky potatoes, grapefruit black pepper cranberry Sauce (fancypants!), stuffing in acorn squash, salads, pies, lentil loaves, and gosh, probably more. I’m met that girl. She’s a wizard. And her partner made a freaking pumpkin cheesecake!

Congrats on ten days of blogging, MoFos!
