Tuesday Round Up O’ Fun and Days Past

Tuesday Round Up O’ Fun and Days Past

I’m filling in for the lovely lazy smurf today for the Mofo Roundup. And I am rounding  up the food posts early because that’s how I roll. This morning is all about food and memory, with a secondary shout out to brown foods because we all know brown food tastes best.

JohnP has once again veganized one of my childhood favorites. Vegan ham rolls! A relative used to bring these to our twice yearly family reunions back in the day. My mother never made them so the only time I could pile drive these tasty, trashy, mini rolls stuffed with ham were at those reunions. The poppy seeds! They make it happen.

Chipped beef gravy on toast! Tofu mom brings it for her Mofo Month of Gravy Goodness. I have odd memories of my mother eating this from a frozen package and this post instantly brought that back. I love bread, gravy and all things smoky and bacony and I will be all over this sometime soon.

I was fortunate to travel to the UK a few years ago to visit Bazu and she had some damn good scones from Brighton for me. My life has been a never ending quest for a good scone in the US ever since. And no, I haven’t found anything that matches just yet. But with Lozzy-Bear’s scone and clotted cream recipe I may be able to have a right proper tea some fine fall afternoon.

Falafel is love. Back in a different day I lived in Brooklyn half a block away from a hole in the wall deli where the two guys made some of the best falafel in NYC. I would stop in occasionally on my way home from work and they always knew me and would often slip me an extra falafel ball to munch on while I waited. The Snarky Chickpea bakes it up with the recipe from Appetite for Reduction. I need to make these again because my current residence is sadly lacking in the mashed chickpea patties I love so well.

Consider me a fan of the food carts in Portland, OR. I am fortunate to have friends there to visit and I love the ability to buy a fried pie or bowl o’ poutine at 1 am. Emmakat featured her plate from the Bombay Chaat House food cart and it will be on my list of carts to visit the next time I am on the west coast. Also, is there a better word than chaat? It has an extra a for fun.

Monday Night Round-Up.

Monday Night Round-Up.

Sometimes a clear theme doesn’t jump out to me across the MoFo feeds, or it’s too ridiculous to put in a post title (aka, The Adorbs Round-Up!), so it’s time for the golden rule of round ups: to throw in some of one’s bookmark-able favorites from the day.

Up first, a post I’m in awe of of: Raw Caramel Chips from Vegan Culinary Crusade. They’re dehydrated and contain an ingredient you may or may not find yourself googling (I totally did).

Next up, perfect little Pumpkin Hand Pies from Oh, Ladycakes. Tis the season!

Moving on, Kelly, The Vegan Cookie Connoisseur, constructs a root beer syrup-flavored UNICORN CAKE. That is all. Just look at it!

Fresh Young Coconut shares some charming Apple Spice Parfaits. Again, tis the season for….please let me wake up and see this on my kitchen table for breakfast.

Milkweek is simply on an enamoring artistic streak – continue on to the post for Coconut Banana Cream Pie making photos! I can’t resist…this is all so adorbs.

Lastly, a quick break from sweets for more breakfast flare: OMG Veg! makes the Biscuits and Creamy Sage Gravy and Herbed Breakfast Sausage Patties, both from Julie Hasson’s Vegan Diner. After this appetizing post, they are so on my to-make-soon list.

Biscuits and Gravy with Vegan Sausage Patties

See you guys next week!

Sunday Feasting: A Round-Up of Dreams

Sunday Feasting: A Round-Up of Dreams

Hi guys, Gabrielle here. I’m starving. Give me all of your foods! No, seriously. My google reader has me seriously craving a dream feast made up of MoFoers’ recipes. Grab a snack and join me as we imagine-eat our way through this thing of beauty.

But! Before we proceed, make sure your nails are painted teal, okay? It’s crucial! It just happens to be National Feral Cat day. Don’t let the national thing turn you away, non-Americans, feral cats are everywhere, awareness is always a great thing, and your nails will be teal.

I think most vegans have made up a meal out of side dishes at a restaurant before, and to be honest, I don’t mind it one bit! Especially if something like this curry-roasted cauliflower from The Urban Vegan is on the menu.

That pretty little squash on my counter has its future determined: delicata squash circles.

Moving on to mains, the Crabby Crafter (adorable blog name!)’s green and white bean casserole with spicy sweet potato wedges looks just dazzling.

I have no self-control when it comes to Ethiopian food—injera gut be dammed. I would eat the hell out of this plate of Aussie-Ethiopian plate from Meet the Wikos.

Vegan MoFo’s own Luciana only ate half of this breakfast burrito! If I didn’t love her so much after meeting her at Vida Vegan Con, I would mock her dainty appetite (and inexplicable affinity for chia kombucha).

Next we’ll zip over to Stuttgart, Germany, where we will munch on these amazing Italian vegan gelato “conos” with Vegan Miam.

Forgetting my theme (if there ever was one) let’s get distracted by Jojo’s adorable Football Food Sunday (she’s a Brit who is watching American football! Hilarious!), featuring avocado fries, barbecue tofu, and loaded potato skins. Give me this spread for a (hockey) game any day.

Oh right, vegans eat salad! How about this gorgeously plated gnocchi potato salad with green beans and quinoa?

Everyone who knows me knows how much I love mushrooms—the more exotic the funghi the better. So I’m pretty stoked on Veg-am’s mushroom instalments for 1 food 5 ways: here is the herbed polenta cups with mushroom onion stuffing.

Finally, I will leave you as I pop a hundred of these peanut butter thumbprint cookies into my mouth from a Toronto farmers’ market via Until We Eat Again.

Chewy, Cheeky, Chesty Chia.

Chewy, Cheeky, Chesty Chia.

Are you surfin’ the chia wave yet?  I know lots of folks have been chewing on chia for years, but I only recently had my first chia pudding.  I dug it.  My lateness to the chia game is crazy, because I’m a big fan of wobbly, chewy things–especially in my beverages.  I am one of the biggest bubble tea cheerleaders, ever.  In the world.

Chia and tapioca shouldn’t really be compared, though.  They’re very different animals.  Or at least, my comparisons shouldn’t be taken too seriously…Boba/tapioca reminds me of candy and desserts, squishy boobs and the age-old adage, “CHEW BEFORE SWALLOW!” Chia, on the other hand is a much smaller and delicate choking concern and more reminiscent of frog eggs than breasts.  I’m not alone in this sentiment either, just read Vegtastic Voyage‘s hilarious experience with her first “chia in kombucha.”  Her story is replete with frog egg pictures, which I’ll be kind enough to leave off of my message today.

Chia is also an insane nutrition power-donkey, and if you get bored with eating it, you can spread it on objects around your house and grow it for novelty!  I wish bubble tea had the same virtues.

From left to rightL Raspberry Passion, Cranberry Lemonade, Cherry Lime and Blackberry Hibiscus

The generous folks at Mamma Chia heard about my recent chia conversion and were nice enough to send me coupons to try each of their four flavors.  These classy drinks are filled with organic juice, organic chia and a little bit of agave.  They’re super-healthy, refreshing, have a bit of protein (4g per serving), omega-3s, and they’re fun to eat or drink (you can’t really drink a beverage you need to chew, and you can’t really eat a drink–so that’s confusing).  After sampling each of these very scientifically in my test kitchen, my favorite flavor, far and away, was Cherry Lime.  It’s tastes like cherry jello and required considerable restraint from me and my lab partner  to keep from adding vodka straight into the bottle.

Mamma Chia wants to spread their chewy, healthy love with you, too. Today we’ll pick three winners;  each of you will win a coupon for a free bottle of Mamma Chia (you pick the flavor), plus another coupon for a buck off of two bottles.

To win, just comment with your best chia alliteration, write about your general love of chia, or if you have any experience incorporating chia with booze, tell me about that.  Winners will be chosen at midnight tonight–East Coast time, so that’s 9PM for you lefties.

The winners are alliteraters Emily comment #18, Candice comment #39 and Beth comment #51.  Please email veganmofoblog at gmail dot com and send us your addresses!

Monday Round-Up: Happy Vegan Thanksgiving, Canadians!

Monday Round-Up: Happy Vegan Thanksgiving, Canadians!

MoFos! I drive all of my American friends up the wall talking about Canadian Thanksgiving—one of my favourite holidays—but they’re just jealous that we don’t have to wait until November to get our Tofurky on. Since I’m currently embarking on an amazing and terrifying house-sitting gig in Victoria, BC, I’ll probably be having toast for dinner, so we can all be jealous of the following Canadian Thanksgiving dishes perfect for channelling your inner hoser.

While those of us out on the West Coast on getting reacquainted with our closest friend—the rain—lucky Nicole in sunny Southern Ontario is taking gorgeous outside shots of these birthday lemon tarts over at at A Dash of Compassion.

I’m a little out of sorts that my Thanksgiving weekend didn’t kick off with these perfect pumpkin waffles from you can’t eat the air!

Is there anything better than apple pie? Evidently, yes, there is apple pie CAKE.

Not only did Jennifer at It Ain’t Meat, Babe discuss vegan Thanksgiving celebrations with on Canada’s prestigious CBC radio, she also found the time to suggest we try her Sweet Potato Bread Pudding. I’ll take advice from anyone with Dylan-inspired blog name.

You’ve seen Bryanna Clark Grogan’s World Vegan Feast making its rounds around the MoFo-sphere, so clearly we knew BCG wouldn’t leave us hanging on Thanksgiving. Try her Mediterranean mashed potatoes, and don’t fret if you find yourself eating them straight out of the pot.

I’m patriotically practising my French by reading Vegan à Montréal, and we all know that Les Français are masters of the crêpe, but it looks as though the Québécois can also hold their own with a Swiss-style chickpea omelet.

Finally, MeShell, I am begging you to invite me to your Thanksgiving next year. Her spread includes cornbread muffins, onion gravy, smashed garlicky potatoes, grapefruit black pepper cranberry Sauce (fancypants!), stuffing in acorn squash, salads, pies, lentil loaves, and gosh, probably more. I’m met that girl. She’s a wizard. And her partner made a freaking pumpkin cheesecake!

Congrats on ten days of blogging, MoFos!

Sunday Round-Up: Warm & Cozy

Sunday Round-Up: Warm & Cozy

Hello, MoFos! Jess here, swapping places with Gabrielle today. My favourte Canadian is out foraging wild mushrooms or knitting cat sweaters while on a ferry, or something else that sounded that adorable.  It’s been a misty fall day in Portland that just makes me want to simmer soup, hug biscuits and warm up under a blanket on the couch with a cat or two. I wouldn’t mind if any of the following bloggers were my personal chefs today, they seem to really have the warm & cozy autumn theme going on…

First up, a South American-Style Hot Chocolate from Bryanna Clark Grogan, as part of her Holiday Brunch Menu. Decadence!

Next up, Fancified Tator Tots with black truffle oil, inspired by Violetta , by Emma Kat. Gourmet tots for the win.

What better way to spend a chilly afternoon than a cooking project? As usual, Julie knows what’s up, and has some awesome looking Quick Dill Pickles to share:

Another great project is some fiery homemade Sriricha, ala Olives for Dinner. Bonus points for cutest hot sauce photo ever.

AstroNOMZ welcomes fall with a PUMPKIN tofu scramble. Enough said!

Fall brings forth Oktoberfest and I am digging the German vegan blogs – check out think. care.act.’s celebratory meal and stop in Bavaria, featuring homemade pretzels:

Over at Thoughts of Life and Dark Chocolate, Steffers heads to France for inspiration on this warm bowl of Seitan Bourguignon. I can practically smell it, warming on the stove…

I’m one of those crazy people that prefer ice cream in the colder months, and this creamy, fall-spiced Pumpkin Ice Cream from Vegan Fazool fits the bill perfectly:

Lastly, Cook.Vegan.Lover reminds us that we’re vegan, and therefore, kale is always in season.

Good night!

Iron Chef Challenge #1

Iron Chef Challenge #1

I usually post these on my own site, but since I have a theme this year, we’re doing this on the MoFo blog!

The VeganMoFo Iron Chef challenge is simple.  I post an ingredient or two on Friday, then on Sunday evening I will gather up the links and post them in a special round-up.  There are no winners, and the only rule is that you have to come up with an original dish, not using a recipe from a book or the internet (edited to add that you also have to make something new, not an old blog post that so happens to involve the ingredient).  Just comment on this entry with the link to your blog post by Sunday, 3 pm CST to participate.

And the secret ingredient is…

CHICKPEAS!

You can use dried, fresh, chickpea flour, you can use hummus (totally counts), whatever!  Have fun and be creative.

Allez Végétalien Cuisine!

Monday Round Up: Simply Bookmark-able

Monday Round Up: Simply Bookmark-able

Hi MoFoville! Jess here, heading into the first week of MoFoville with a corny post title and straightforward round up. I simply wandered the grand RSS Feed throughout the day, and bookmarked what I super duper liked. I mean, some of these things could wind up on the menu at my next dinner party. Some may inspire an obsession with a certain cuisine for the next month. Others, I just may dream about. They were all simply bookmark-able.

First up, the method for Emergency Oven-dried Tomatoes over at The Radioactive Vegan.  I totally want a batch!

Thank you to Vegan fuür Anfänger und Fortgeschrittene, because I had no idea Roulade with red cabbage and Semmelknödel was missing from my life, and I want to sample this warming German dinner:

Kudos to Boom Boom Legume’s tv talk and blood-glazed cupcakes for the season premiere for Dexter. Smart.

I can practically smell these savoury Herbivore Cheese Scones (I’m a sucker, ok?), fresh from the oven, over at Vegan Chicks Rock.

Dynise, aka Urban Vegan, has a catchy post title and handy sauce-making method in how to succeed at spaghetti sauce without really trying. Follow her lead and taste those tomatoes, folks!

Scissors & Spice shows off a saucey spoonful of some delicious sounding October Fest Maple BBQ Sauce. What a great shot. Of course, I totally agree that maple is the best BBQ sauce sweetener, ever.

Love the look of Andy’s Velvetty Collards Soup with a swirl of hot sauce over at In My Vegan Life. Hello, fall. Hello…I want a bowl for lunch tomorrow.

Lastly, let’s finish up and share Grumpy’s homemade caramel apple over at Vegan CineGrub. There are 6 more candy-coated apples and a caramel making tutorial, as well.

Keep up the greatness!

VeganMoFo Banners For Your Blog

VeganMoFo Banners For Your Blog

Psst..wanna’ buy a banner? Okay, I won’t freak you out by opening my trenchcoat. And besides, the banners are, like, free! Please put them all over your site and link back to us here at MoFo Headquarters: http://www.VeganMoFo.com. Once The Vegan Month Of Food starts, you can also use them in your posts to let people know that it’s a VeganMoFo post. But don’t forget to tag your posts VeganMoFo, too! That can help your traffic a lot if people are seeking out MoFo specific posts.

And now without further ado…the lovely banners designed by Amanda at Will Draw For Cookies! Just right click to download and use. The white ones look a little funny here because of the white background, but they’ll look great on backgrounds that aren’t so very white.
