GIVEAWAY: Salad Samurai by Terry Hope Romero
This Giveaway is now Closed
When you are a vegan people ask you the same annoying questions over and over (ie Do you eat chicken?). But if you are a vegan that doesn’t like salad, let me tell you from first hand knowledge, that you are going to have some serious ‘splainin’ to do. People look at you, aghast, “But what do you eat???”.
Well folks, with this amazing new book by Terry Hope Romero I can easily answer now with salads like “Spring Herb Salad with Maple Orange Tempeh, or Deviled Kale Caesar Salad or Seared Garlic Chickpeas, Spinach, and Farro”. Terry’s book is full of recipes that I would actually not just eat but completely enjoy. The book has so many dressings like Chia Chipotle Dressing and toppings like Curried Cashew Pepita Crunch that you can add to any old boring salad you make to make it awesome too! Proteins like that 70’s tofu have been huge hits over on the PPK. And it’s arranged seasonally so you won’t be trying to use so-called “tomatoes” in the dead of winter. I am a salad hater no more! Here is a great and thorough review from Vegan Eats and Treats if you want to learn more and see tons of pictures.
Now if you want to win a copy from one the greatest vegan authors of our time you must have a US or Canada address, fill in your email, and answer me this question in the next 24 hours. What is the one thing that you like to add to any salad that will make it pop? Extra Rule! You can not answer with anything that someone ahead of you has already said. SO if the first comment is “Olives” you bet your ass you better not answer olives. Unless you want to lose!

We love to add nice, crunchy, toasted pepitas to our salads!
avocado!
Hemp seeds! Kinda boring, I know, but they go with pretty much every flavor combo and they’re so good for ya!
I like to add roasted red peppers and chickpeas! This book sounds really interesting 🙂
Pumpkin seeds! Especially if they’re roasted with chili-lime or wasabi.
Quinoa!
Hummus!
The most unhealthy thing ever – uncooked ramen noodles!
Beans! Great for protein. Black beans are my favorite!
A bit of mustard in most salad dressings adds just the perfect amount of tang and a little heat.
Chorizo Seitan ‘croutons’
dried cranberries (especially on salads with toasted nuts)!
Almonds!
Frozen peas! (Thawed, of course!)
Nutritional yeast, always.
I think gomashio takes all salads to the next level. I really want that cookbook.
Homemade croutons! So much better than store-bought.
Any sort of fresh herbs 🙂
Strawberries! I love the sweetness of them with the rest of the salad.
Boy am I glad I got here early before all the tastiest answers were taken. Dried fruit is always a great way to enhance a salad.
Hit post too soon. As I was saying, dried fruit and specifically golden raisins.
Toasted Rice Powder- Terry Hope Romero’s recipe from Vegan Eats World. She suggests putting it on salads, and I love it, adds a crunch!
Balsamic vinegar!
Roasted beets sliced It’s actually 4 ingredients but I had to chose one and this is key to make it magic though maybe it’s the combo. This book looks amazing!
Baked marinated tofu! Love how crispy and chewy it gets
Seaweeds. Especially dulse seaweeds. Miammm !!! I really want this book 🙂 Thanks for this giveaway.
walnuts
Mandarin Oranges
roasted sweet potato! WALNUTS!
Any kind of pickled veggie. For example: cucumber, ginger, red pepper etc.
LEMON of course!
caramelized onions
Furikake or togarashi seasoning!
baked tempeh bits!
shaved fennel or simply some garden tomatoes in the summer..can’t beat that perfect sun ripened fruit
When it’s in season, corn cut off the cob!
Roasted pineapple because it makes the worst day sunny
Salsa! Specifically pureed salsa. Gives a nice kick and coats greens like a dressing.
Can I add two things?! I really like adding some type of veggie chicken or seitan. I also love to throw cilantro in everything! I am so curious about this cookbook!
Fresh herbs, especially basil!
Pecans and dried cranberries
Buffalo Tofu Cubes!
Cherry tomatoes, not really revolutionary, but I adore the burst when you bite into them
I love baked, crispy edamame on my salads.
jalapenos/banana pepper! better believe I like a spicy kick in my salads!
artichoke hearts
Hazelnuts
Soba noodles and sriracha! I need to eat more salad for sure…
I already got the book, but check out my review from June! http://kzcakes.blogspot.com/2014/06/salad-samurai-review.html
Coconut bacon! I can’t believe no one else has said coconut bacon!
Pomegranate seeds or kiwi berries.
Tempeh bacon especially on vegan caesar salad with extra nooch and garlicky croutons.
Eggplant bacon
Toasted Rye and Hemp seeds.
my name is Thom not Thin, btw.
Green onions!
Garbanzo beans & dried nuts. The combo actually for some reason tastes a little “eggy” and since I don’t eat eggs any more (but still miss the taste), it’s a welcome flavor addition.
Fresh papaya- super crisp, clean & healthy. And star fruit is very popular here to ad a touch of sweetness!
awesome veg parm made from walnuts, nutritional yeast, and miso!
Pan-fried soy grounds! http://www.easyvegan.info/2014/09/23/carbs-and-rec-salad-and-other-disgusting-things/
radish
I love fresh raw baby asparagus sliced and tossed into salads, crisp and sweet.
Apples! Especially in fall when they’re at their sweetest and tangiest best.
Giardiniera! Adds a delicious spicy kick! Also, this word is nearly impossible to spell!
Red cabbage adds great crunch!
Tofu feta! Fun list. I need to eat so many salads and try them all.
Parma, store bought. Or homemade Parmesan, made with miso, nutritional yeast and ground pistachios.
Crushed tortilla chips and pomegranate vinegar.
Red chilli flakes and fresh coriander
Cashews!
Dukkah! I got a little jar of this delicious spice mix from Trader Joe’s and now I put it on everything!
Miso – it makes a great savoury addition to a vinaigrette! (And I find it makes the oil and vinegar emulsify better) Also, any fruit adds an interesting and unexpected hit of sweetness (my new favourite is peaches!).
Sesame sticks! CRONCH CRONCH CRONCH
Crushed raspberries!
Chia seeds! Extra boost of nutrients is always good.
Raw apple cider vinegar! It emulsifies with the hummus that I usually add and makes it so tangy! Lemon juice works, too, but I just buy jugs of the apple cider vinegar.
Bulgur wheat! Cooked, of course.
I see repeats. Not sure how specific you have to be, but I always put fire-roasted corn on my salads!! Since someone already mentioned corn fresh off the cob, I’m not sure this counts. So I’ll add one: tempeh marinated in sweet chili sauce. Or did someone already mention tempeh? And just in case that was already taken, SPROUTS!!! Any kind. They always go on top of my salads 🙂
Don’t worry, repeaters are not going to win!!!! I will check!
Some of my favorite topping have been picked (fruit like cranberries/mandarin oranges/strawberries) but for a more savory salad I like to throw in roasted garlic. Thanks for the Giveaway!
Since the first ten favorites I thought of were already taken, I’m going to go with sun-dried tomatoes. 🙂
watermelon and mint leaves
Kale
Sriracha sauce
Sunflower seeds and fresh shredded organic carrots! Those two… so yum.
Pickled onions!
Salt and Pepper. It seems silly but so many people don’t salt and pepper a salad. I also like lemon but that’s already been used.
Love all these toppings!
My favorite: Edamame! (more specifically usually coated in Frank’s)
And just to clarify – not the baked kind crisp kind that was previously listed, the steamed soft kind in hot sauce..totally different topping!
pine nuts. so rich!
Roasted, lightly salted, sesame seeds!
Ooooh….OOOOH….BBQ sauce! I hate dressing, but make a salad with all the Midwest-lovin’ ingredients and top with BBQ sauce….oh man I’m salivating….
Arugula adds a peppery strong hit to any salad. It takes a day from ok to awake!
Tahini dressing makes the best salads.
Soy sauce! I think I learned it from the Happy Herbivore. Now I never use traditional dressing.
I love, love, love adding cashew ranch on my salads. Even if there’s already another dressing mixed in.
Pickled okra!
BBQ jackfruit is a yummy salad topper.
Asparagus, tomatoes, and sesame seeds!
