Sunday Round-Up

Sunday Round-Up

Hi MoFos! Happy Canadian Thanksgiving. I seem to always post on Canadian Thanksgiving. I hope you fellow canucks are having delicious seitan roasts and impeccably roasted Brussels Sprouts, because I’m sitting here with a glass of wine and some crackers. Oh, work.

Anyway! I’ve been loving reading the MoFo-ing this year. Here’s my random Sunday round-up from MoFoHQ.

Erin Wiko’s theme is unbelievably adorable. Who doesn’t love a cute dress? Who doesn’t love a cute dress paired with a homemade strawberry-basil jam? Monsters, that’s who.

When it comes to MoFo-ing, Amey is no slouch. Who else draws up adorable doodles of their furry family and partner? Amey made a Pad Thai Salad from Appetite for Reduction, and this is her depiction of her own raw onion breath.

The Snarky Chickpea made what I wish I was eating for Thanksgiving: Chickpea cutlets, mashed potatoes, and charred Brussels sprouts.

I had never heard of biscuits and gravy before I lived in America, but it is indeed a beautiful creation and Lazy Smurf’s version from Vegan Diner makes me so, so jealous.

Finally, who doesn’t love Janis Joplin-inspired food? Even if you don’t (but you should), you’ll drool over this tipsy omelet.

Vegan Essentials Giveaway And Discount Code! (Hint: It’s “mofo”)

Vegan Essentials Giveaway And Discount Code! (Hint: It’s “mofo”)

We have our winners!! Congrats to Nathalie who said  “I would love to try to Cocomels coconut milk caramels!” You are the winner of the $30 gift certificate.

And  Denice Lucas who said “I am DYING to try the vegan cheeses. I am a cheese freak and would love to find a vegan alternative.” You are the winner of the $15 gift certificate!

Thanks for playing everyone, and remember that the 10% off coupon code is good for the entire month of October!

Since I’ve relocated to the Midwest, Vegan Essentials has become my friendly neighborhood vegan grocer. Ok, maybe they are hundreds of miles away, but still, that’s the closest I’m going to get to my precious Dr. Cow Nut Cheeses and my fave whipped topping in the world (Healthy Top, if you gotta’ know.) After placing a few orders that were always prompt and well-packaged, I knew that whenever I had reason to thank someone, I’d do it with a Vegan Essentials gift certificate. When it comes time to show some love, forget hugs, I give ‘em marshmallows or whatever their heart desires. And this month, dear MoFoer’s, Vegan Essentials wants to show YOU some love!

Rounding up the bread basket

Rounding up the bread basket

There’s nothing I love more on the weekend than taking the time to leisurely bake my own bread, before settling in to browse the MoFo feed with a freshly brewed pot of coffee and the aroma of fresh bread wafting through the house. It looks like I’m not alone this year, because the MoFo feed is resembling the best vegan bakery window I’ve ever seen!

This sourdough chocolate bread from Cook’s Hideout looks like the perfect loaf to wake up to. This is on my menu for next weekend for sure.

I’ve been salivating over the sneak peek photos that I’ve seen for Isa’s upcoming cookbook, shot by the super talented photographer Vanessa Rees. Girl can cook, too- check out her beautiful pull-apart pumpkin herb bread if you don’t believe me.

I love cooking with beer, and this seasonal maple beer bread from The Table Fort looks like the perfect Saturday afternoon project (some for the loaf, and some for me).

Stephanie from Ripe is offering up not one, but two delicious pretzel recipes, each with an accompanying dip- do salty pretzels with fleur de sel and golden raisin ketchup or sweet pretzels with palm sugar, cinnamon and homemade maple pumpkin butter take your fancy?

Richa‘s pizza theme has been one of my favourites this year, not just for her super creative toppings, but for her drool-worthy pizza crusts. Being a bigger fan of the bread than the topping, I’m loving the look of this thick, gluten free oat crust. The tempeh tikka masala topping is a bonus!

If you’re wondering what to do with all this bread, why not whip up this homemade bread pudding with maple almond streusel? Southern Vegans have got your full evening planned with a homemade vegan Bailey’s recipe to enjoy alongside it!

And with that, my oven timer’s gone off. Just in time, too. I don’t think I can even wait for my crusty, no-knead loaf to cool.

Day-Five-Friday MoFo Round Up!

Day-Five-Friday MoFo Round Up!

Hello, hello, and happy day-five-Friday, MoFo-land! Jess here, and I’ve spent so much of the past day, our big fifth day in, scouring the internet, clicking and scrolling and being inspired all over the place, while most importantly, bookmarking the posts that make me smile and point at the screen to my girlfriend who’s sitting next to me on the couch.

First up, I love fall and I love apples and I love cinnamon and I love doughnuts and I love autumn leaves and you get that I’m excited, SO, therefore, check these out from Shannon at Leaves & Flowers and see why:

Just as autumn appropriate are Vegan Crunk’s pumpkin cheddar biscuits on Panda With Cookie for Lisa’s Friday Fun theme. I must say, I’ve enjoyed these biscuits, and I want to enjoy them some more!

Commence cute attack with the playful food posts, this time with a green bell pepper monster, from the mother & daughter duo at Earthy Veg:

Shucks.

Our friend Mary from Nether Ending Story in you guessed it, the Netherlands, nerds out with an adorable build-your-own cookbook idea:

Do it!

Next up, breadsticks and subsequent rustic marinara for dipping from the Unintentional Vegan – because this was one I had to point out to J. Legume because when doesn’t she want breadsticks for dinner? When don’t I? When don’t you?!

Earlier today, fellow round-upper Stephanie aka Lazy Smurf, shared her life-changing video on the following topic, and please, I urge you – CLICK ON THIS LINK (because I’m having an issue embedding it):

*************PSA: Burritos vs. Tacos*************

Tacos. Burritos. Tacos! Burritos! Ah!

And let me add, J. Legume instantly recognized Lazy Smurfy because she’s friends with Dinger and Willow, from this little post

And bonus: even more tacos – this time, joined by enchiladas – from Vegan Soul Food:

Giveaway – Allergy Riders

Giveaway – Allergy Riders

Congratulations to our winners, Susan and Penny! Check your emails, ladies. To those that missed out, don’t despair because we’ve got more Australian-friendly giveaways lined up this month. Just keep checking back!

Vegans of the world, we’ve heard your cries (uttered through mouthfuls of vegan cake). While giveaways are great fun, they’re often less great for those who get left watching from an ocean away. Well, Australians, I’ve come on board from our nation’s capital, and I’m ready to tackle the serious issues. Forget the carbon tax- I’m running on a mandate of free baking supplies for my fellow local vegans.

Are you tired of having to interrogate strangers at bake sales about what you can eat? Or worse, are you sick of having to use your mouth (which could be better used munching on delicious vegan brownies) to tell people which items you’ve made are vegan, gluten free, nut free, or all of the above? Allergy Riders have got your back, in super cute style.

Their baking cups and food flags are perfect for vegan bakers and those with allergies. They’ve even got our xgfx brothers and sisters covered! No longer will you waste precious eating time poring over handwritten ingredient lists or discussing your food choices with others (not that we mind, it’s just that sometimes those discussions are best had on a full stomach).

Allergy Riders have kindly donated two prize packs, each containing two packs of baking cups and two packs of food flags of the winners’ choice. Two winners will be randomly selected at 11am AEST tomorrow. To enter, leave a comment here (with a valid email address) letting us know which sweet or savoury treat you always keep an eye out for at bake sales. Australians only, please!

Iron Chef Challenge: #1

Iron Chef Challenge: #1

Welcome, everyone, to another year of Vegan MoFo Iron Chef!  Katie, who usually hosts this competition, has put her faith in me this month.

Fridays during the month of October will feature Iron Chef Challenges, wherein participants will use the week’s secret ingredient in a unique dish and post a link to the recipe. On Sundays I will do a roundup of the participating blogs’ dishes.

This week I wanted to chose an ingredient that is used in cuisines around the world, is fairly inexpensive, and can be used in a diversity of dishes.  According to Wikipedia, this vegetable has been cultivated since the second millennium BC, so I’m sure there are a few recipes to guide you through this challenge.

A quick review of our few simple rules/guidelines:

1. Whatever you come up with has to be new, nothing from a cookbook or a blog, not something you posted last week that happens to involve the secret ingredient. It’s fine to use a recipe for a jump-off point, but make it your own!
2. Entries are due at 3 pm PST on Sunday.
3. Have fun and be creative!

Let’s not beet around the bush. (Did you guess the secret ingredient just then?)

The secret ingredient is BEETROOT!

Think pickled/steamed/roasted/pureed/boiled/shredded beets, beet greens, beet juice as dye…really beets are quite a diverse vegetable! With their natural sweetness, they lend themselves to both sweet and savory dishes.

To participate, just comment on this entry with the link to your blog post by Sunday, 3 pm PST.

Allez Végétalien Cuisine!
(Disregard the carrots! Although delicious, they are not part of this challenge!)

PS- I apologize for posting this late.  Work gets in the way sometimes.  For this reason, if you don’t get around to posting your links until a little after 3 p.m. on Sunday, I’ll try to still feature your dish in the roundup!  I’ll be posting the challenges earlier in upcoming weeks.

Giveaway – Joni Marie Newman Books

Giveaway – Joni Marie Newman Books

Winners!

Lisa Marie: The vegan food gift I’d most like to receive is a trip back to NYC for dinner at Candle 79. Does that count? I really miss that place. 🙁

I’d really like The Best Veggie Burgers on the Planet. I’ve had it on my wishlist for a while.

Veronica: There’s a few things I’d like but I really need a tofu press! Hearty Vegan Meals for Monster appetites would be best for me, I have a 13 year old who plays baseball & football and he definitely has a monster appetite!

Adeline: A pumpkin pie. I just can’t get it right for some odd reason.

Vegan Food Gifts or Hearty Vegan. [you’ll be getting Vegan Gifts]

Check your email shortly!

If I had to describe Joni’s recipe style to someone who was unfamiliar with her, i’d probably say “Girl doesn’t mess around.” My impression of Joni is that she isn’t interested in putting out a book that isn’t designed to knock some socks off. There is no recreating the tofu scramble, or jumping on the latest health trend to cash in. Her love of comfort food combined with Celine Steen’s creative use of ingredients created one of the best vegan cookbooks of all time, Hearty Vegan Meals For Monster Appetites. Unapologetically decadent, it is the book to pull out when you really need to wow someone.

Long before she hooked up with Celine, Joni had self-published her own book and was working on a veggie burger book for years. Good things come to those who wait, I know when I got my copy I thought, “How can anyone come up with 100 veggie burger recipes and not just repeat themselves?” If you have the book, you know that Joni took things that you would never think of making into a patty and did it.

Her new book (number six!), Vegan Gifts just came out. I can’t tell you much about it since I don’t have it, but I can tell you that Kurt Halsey (tween fan girl squee) illustrated it, and if you look at Joni’s flickr account, you can see pictures of many of the recipes. Mixes, cookies, snacks, and canned goods galore! I know every year I struggle to think of new food gifts to give people (also I always end up eating half of those buckeye ball myself), so I personally can’t wait to get my hands on it. I wrote a guide to vegan cookbooks on my blog a few months ago, and one of the points I mentioned for buying a new book is, does it fill a hole in my collection? The answer here is a big YES. And with Celine taking the photos, you know it’s just as nice as the books she’s done with Joni.

But if you don’t want to take my word for it, why don’t we just give you a book for funsies?

Joni has offered up a copy each of three of her books today, Hearty Vegan Meals, The Best Veggie Burgers On The Planet, and Vegan Gifts. Please say which book you would like so you don’t win one you already have (if you’d be happy with any, feel free to say so as well). Simply comment here, telling us what vegan food gift you’d most like to receive for [winter holiday that you celebrate/refuse to participate in]. Three winners will be picked tomorrow morning at 11 am CST, US only (we have UK and Aussie only giveaways coming, don’t worry!).

Round-Up: Let’s Hear it for the Pie!

Round-Up: Let’s Hear it for the Pie!

Aww yeah, Mofos!  We are back for another live edition of round up goodness.  Truthfully, this one was inspired by one of the fellow organizers.  I saw the most amazing layered soul food pie ever at Kittee’s blog, and thought pie is a great thing to roundup.  So, let’s giddyup!

We’ll start with the savory.  Megan at The Vegan Cookbook Aficionado was throwing down with her rendition of Pâté Chinois, a French Canadian staple.  Just check out her sexy lentils.

There’s also no shortage of autumnal pies.  This is the time of year for apples and sweet potatoes and pumpkin! OH MY!

Raw apple pie goodness coming from Allysia.

And lookit how cute Ashley’s sweet potato pie cups are!  So freaking cute!

Plus, Molly Alice Nests is flipping the switch and blowing my mind with these absolutely dreamy butternut squash pie bars!  So pretty.

Behold the versatility of pie.  The amazing Joni is tarting it up with her delightfully colorful avocado coconut lime tartlets, while Allyson lays down that sweet and salty caramel drizzle on her pear and ginger ricotta cheesecake.  Aww yeah.  Can we get some Marvin Gaye playing up in here?

If this post has inspired you to enjoy more pie in your life, why not try throwing a pie potluck like fellow MoFo organizer AndyDufresne?  And be sure to invite me!

Until next time…Happy Mofoing!

Giveaway – Field Roast

Giveaway – Field Roast

Our main winner is CQ: My family and I don’t really…”gather”. But one time I was meeting up with my parents and my grandma (whom I hadn’t seen in a long time) for lunch in NYC, and despite my having explained to my parents a zillion times what I would and would not eat, and gave them a list of possible restaurants where we could eat, they chose a restaurant that wasn’t on my list and sure enough, it was a Chinese restaurant where everything (including the sauces) had meat in it. We had to leave and go find somewhere else to eat. It was…yeah, pretty awkward.

Also, my Field Roast contact said I could pick a couple of more winners to receive a coupon, so we have two runners up!

Kirsten: I’m a newbie, but the latest experience that kind of qualifies was my sister saying on the phone, “so are you now going to be a vegan?” Kind of reminded me of the time my mom asked, “so are you going to come home for Christmas and be gay everyday?” Yes people, every day, all day!

Marti: [rant with some cuss words]…(OK, THAT rant isn’t going to win me any Field Roast, but I decided not to put up with ANY family not-vegan drama many years ago and that’s pretty much the end of the story…) But look, it did!

Check your emails shortly!

Ah, fall. The changing leaves, the cooler weather, and…the holidays! Depending on how you spend your fall/winter holidays and with who, they can either be great or a miserable experience. I cook our Thanksgiving dinner, but on Christmas we truck it to grandma’s house, and of course there’s no food for me there. So if I don’t feel like making something and bringing it with, i’m out of luck.

That’s where things like the Field Roast Celebration Roast (which I did take with me a few years ago) and Hazelnut Cranberry Roast En Croute come in handy. Sometimes there’s no leftovers from Christmas Eve, sometimes you have the flu, sometimes you are just lazy, okay? And a mini-roast or a fancy pastry-wrapped roast are a lot nicer than the granola bar you have stashed in your purse.

The kind folks at Field Roast have a special package today for one very lucky winner, two free product coupons (one for each product mentioned) and a t-shirt! Simply comment here and tell me your most awkward vegan family gathering experience. A winner will be chosen tomorrow at 11 AM, CST. US only!
