oh…hey there… blogging world…!

Hi everyone,

Bazu here, dipping my toes in the blogging waters for the first time in ages. Even though my own blog is on indefinite hiatus, I was thrilled to be asked to be a MoFO rounder-upper again this year.

For my first round-up, I’m showcasing some blogs by new, transitioning, or not-quite- vegans. First up, my friend JessieBea (who for some totally unknown reason left frozen Syracuse for sunny Southern California recently) reviews a great restaurant in the Valley. This is especially near and dear to my heart because my parents live in Van Nuys and I know I’ll be hitting up the Hummus King when I visit them:

Next, another Southern CA restaurant: OMGosh I’m Vegan posts this, possibly the perfect take-out meal, the Happy Vegan from Tender Greens. You need to hop over to the blog to see the full monty of “tabbouleh, hummus, pasta pearls, faro wheat, young kale and tender greens”.

If you guys know me, you know that I don’t shy away from controversy. That is why this brownie post from the Not a Rabbit blog so appealed to me- sister isn’t afraid of saying it like it is. And I quote,

“They say that people fall into two groups when it comes to brownies-
1) Those who like cakey brownies
and
2) Those who like fudgy brownies.

At the risk of being controversial, I think there is only one group:

1) Those who like fudgy brownies (known otherwise simply as “Brownies”).”

Sing it! If you like cakey brownies, go eat some chocolate cake. If you like exquisite fudgy brownies, then try her recipe.

Next up, perhaps you need to cut some of that sweetness a bit? Stephanie from Newly Vegan gives a recipe for tofu bacon. Go check it out because if you’re anything like me, this needs to be part of your immediate future:

Whether you’re a new vegan, an old hat, or just a sometimes vegan, sometimes convenience is really nice. I like Gardein. And Deena at Libra Loves reviews a product I’ve never tried, but now clearly need to: Gardein Stuffed Turkey!

Vegan MoFo Round Up 4: It's Not Unusual…

Yes, I have Tom Jones on the brain now.  Thought I’d spread the wealth.  This round up is brought to you mostly by unique and awesome posts.  Sometimes awesome blog names.  Also…an extreme lack of sleep.

Let’s just hit it out of the park on the first pitch, shall we?  I stumbled upon Joe’s blog because I really thought the fellas deserved a little love and found the most amazing/intriguing thing that I’ve seen yet.  Chocolate covered garlic.  Wrap that around your heads, people!  Amazing!  Need proof?  Take a look at this picture:

Speaking of the fellas, I really am so in love with John P’s theme this year.  Check out his caraway bread!  He’s making recipes from vintage cookbooks!  Such an interesting idea.  I love learning about what people used to eat and how much food has evolved.  I’m just thankful we aren’t setting things in jello molds anymore.  Brrr.  Perfection salad.

Not to be outdone, Mr. Bran got into the kitchen and fixed his Panda some delicious looking Bisquick pancakes.  Ain’t no shame in his game!  Also, if he had opposable thumbs I’m pretty sure this would be the time for a z-formation snap.

As a lover of all things related to vegan cheeses, imagine my surprise when I saw a huge post on Nice Things where Ditte breaks down her absolute favorite cheeses!  Homemade, store bought, it’s all there!  I had to wash down all the cheese love with an equally impressive bruschetta and cheese covered flatbread that I saw on Zombie Cats Eating Plants.  Not only is the name great, but it’s like Amber wants me to come over for dinner!

Another blog name that caught my eye and gave me a good chuckle was Babes in Soyland.  Check out Kayla’s post on the vegan sausage maple waffle.  Why aren’t there more handheld vegan waffle sandwiches?

Finally, I bring you my love of sweet potatoes!  I seriously adore anything savory made with this delicious tuber.  Imagine my shock when I saw that Pavani from Cook’s Hideout had created none other than sweet potato naan!  So excited!!!!

It’s Day 3 of Vegan Mofo, and I’m amazed by the number of delicious and creative ideas folks have come up with. For some reason I had dessert on my brain today. I’d blame it on the cooler weather, but even the frozen desserts caught my attention.

Over at Hell Yeah It’s Vegan, Claryn makes a really tasty yellow berry cake with buttercream frosting. At Parsley Park, Rom gives us a recipe for some creepy and cute Chocolate Skull cakes

Easy Vegan shares a ton of info about ice cream makers and shows us a delicious assortment of vegan ice cream. Not a Rabbit lays down the law about proper brownies.

Fudgy Brownies

Pure Life Chef makes some lovely Sundae Cupcakes and makes Hazelnut Biscuits that are wholesome, yet decadent with their yummy dark chocolate filling. Bev at Red Hot Vegan Momma makes homemade Bourbon Creams that I wish I was eating right now.  I didn’t know they didn’t actually have bourbon in them, I just knew they were delicious! Over at In the Mood for Noodles, Toby and K make some vegan honeycomb candy.

The Chocolate Chip, Oatmeal, and Almond Butter cookies over at ‘Scend Food sound like a great variation of the classic, and don’t forget to check out Vegansaurus for this week’s veganized Top Chef : Just Desserts recipe.

2010 Blog Reader Options for the Brainy or Obsessed.

Our super excellent friend and fellow MoFie, pickledtreats,  worked all night to bring us awesome ways to read all of these blogs–we ended up smashin’ 700 yesterday!  Besides the normal “click ‘n’ read” we’re offering two ways for you to access this year’s VeganMoFo blogs.

The first is for Google Reader users. If you have Google Reader you can subscribe to all of the blogs in one click! Below is a link to the Google Reader bundle that contains a “subscribe” to all feeds button. This will take you to your Google Reader page (you may have to log in) where you can choose to subscribe to all of these feeds at once, which will be created in a separate folder in your subscriptions.

The second option is a little more technical, but this is for you if you use a feed reader other than Google Reader. Don’t worry – it’s not scary! Most feed readers have the option of importing blog feeds, but they need to be in what’s called an OPML file. We have included a link to an OPML file of the VeganMoFo blogs. Clicking the link will download this file onto your computer – or you can right-click it and select “save link as” and name it what you like. You now have a .xml file of the mofo blogs – probably in your downloads folder. Go to your reader of choice and follow its instructions for importing blogs. It should ask you to select a file…that’s the VeganMoFo file you saved! Wow, over 700 blogs have signed up. And we won’t have an RSS feed until tomorrow! So the MoFo blog roll is like an unwieldy cat that you’re trying to give a bath. Or something. So I just went with the blog titles that caught my eye.

In The Mood For Noodles got me in the mood to organize my spices. A ziplock bag filing system? Of course I’ll never do it, but color me impressed.

There are some decked out peanut butter cups at Hungry Hungry Hippie. I’m a little skeptical about the nooch in the peanut butter filling, but I’ve been wrong before. Like, once maybe.

Having just visited Milwaukee, I was curious as to what was going on over at Milwaukee Vegan Bake Sale. It turns out quite a lot! I’m a sucker for Japanese food and pea shoots, so this was right up my alley. Pea Shoot And Tofu Gyoza! Lots of photos, too.

Is it possible to not click on a blog called Vegan Bunz Of Cinnamon? Not in my world. And I’m glad I did! I love to hear about killer vegan options in unexpected places, like a cheese shop in Wisconsin!

Oh Cauliflowerhead had me at “cauli.” Check out this Singapore blog for Thick Rice Noodle Fried Fish Soup. There’s no fish in there, dummy, it’s Vegan MoFo!

Stephan over at Vegan Stephan is my real life friend, so of course you have to check in and see what your friends are up to. Maybe I was thinking he hadn’t blogged at all and I would get to chastise him, but no dice. He’s made a fantastic looking soup from Terry’s Viva Vegan Potato Kale Soup with Sizzling Chorizo.

If you like to be comforted by apples AND whiskey then get thee to It Ain’t Meat, Babe, where a scrumptious looking crisp awaits you.

Vi?t Nam ?n Chay is written in, duh, Vietnamese! Thank heavens for Google translations. I plan on visiting Vietnam next year so I will be following this blog closely. Maybe she’ll have some of this Mushroom Spaghetti waiting for me when I land.

Friends! Romans! Country-vegans!

Vegan MoFo has begun! What a great kick-off… with the posts already coming in fast and furious, faithful readers have much blog-reading to do!

Naturally enough, with MoFo coming in November this year… Day One of MoFo offered lots of Halloween recapping, and lots of pumpkin recipes. And, where there are pumpkin recipes, there are sure to be sweet potatoes too.

Musings From the Fishbowl offers a really wonderful, step-by-step guide to roasting your pumpkin and transforming it into homemade pumpkin puree. My own mother, who is a very practical lady, taught me from an early age to salvage the jack-o-lantern off the front porch and turn it into dinner, so this post is very much after my own heart.

Similarly, “Cooking Green Food up North” has her very first encounter with cooking and eating pumpkin. What a momentous occasion! She’s got 15 more cups of pumpkin puree, so I’m sure she’ll be happy to take suggestions. Maybe she should try Swell Vegan’s Maple-Glazed Pumpkin Cornbread!

If you’ve had enough pumpkin and want to eat some sweet potatoes instead, the mofoers are there for you. First of all, check out Vegan Soul Power‘s excellent pictorial step-by-step on making lovely orange little Sweet Potato gnocchi. Mmmmmmmmm!

Usually, I’m not the biggest fan of burrito pictures on food blogs. You know, it’s hard to make a burrito into something photogenic. BUT apparently Super Vegan really does have super powers, because somehow this sweet potato and black bean burrito really caught my eye.

Of course, some people just like it all, and My Vancouver Kitchen cooked up a tasty spread of pumpkin AND sweet potato goodies– pumpkin brownies, black bean and sweet potato chili, roasted pumpkin seeds… mmm! Plus, not related to pumpkin, she made donut holes. And really, who can resist donut holes?!

Last, but not least, and totally unrelated to the stream of pumpkin and sweet potato blog posts, Liz over at Food Snobbery Is My Hobby posted about some amazing hickory nut scones. I want one!

I just ate a nice handful of roasted hazelnuts mixed with white chocolate chips, so it’s most likely them talkin’, but I thought y’all might like a peeksy into The MoFo That is to Come. Also, did you know our numbers are above 456? It’s uh-uh-mazing, we might even crash the internet with all of our sweet potato, pecan pie, veganizing wizardry that is about to bubble over. Here are some trick or treat tidbits for ya, since it’s best to be prepared for the unknown, lest it sneaks up on you and smacks you in the behind [insert secret handshake here].

Your eyes shall bedazzle when you see how international we have become;   Ze MoFo World includes:  Spain, South Africa, Australia, UK, Austria, Canada, Germany, Poland, South Korea, Mexico, Belgium, The Netherlands, Singapore, Sweden, Philippines, Japan, France, Egypt, Denmark, French West Indies, Israel and even West Virginia!  (Please let me know if I made any gaping holes. )  Also,  MoFo won’t be broadcast in English alone, oh-no-no-no, it shall come through in German, Czech, Vietnamese, Polish, German, Russian, Portuguese, French, Arabic and even  Gluten-Freeize (thank you so much for not making me link to all of those–the gluten-freeize would be particularly challenging).

Here’s a beauty of a picture I stole from the super creative to the max River, from Wing-It Vegan— to make my post look good, obs.  And also, her quinoa is seriously scaring me to death with its nutrient denseness hangin’ out like that.

There is gonna be so much creative stuff going on that it hurts my brain to think about, and we even have Milkweed who will be drawing MoFo in comics–I will repeat and bold for those of you, who I know are skimming.  MILKWEED IS DRAWING ALL RECIPES ALL THE TIME IN COMICS.  I bet you already know Mofies can cook, but do you know they can really seriously cook–like really bang it out with publishers and test kitchens and everything?  Besides our super lovely Isa, we also have a slew of other vegan cookbook authors participating including Julie Hasson, Joni Marie Newman, Bryanna Clark Grogan, Louise Hagler (did I just type that outloud??!), Melisser Elliott, Joanna Vaught, Tamasin Noyes, Kelly Peloza, Alicia Simpson, Kris Holechek, Carla Kelly, Taymer Mason and probably more–but really with a count that high, who can keep track of the awesomeness?

This post made my bedazzled eyes bleed and my over taxed brain swell with encephalitis juice, thanks to your need for gossip and info-mation.  Plus, Isa is distracting me with her tempting tofu ball talk, when all I have to eat is leftover lentil-potato-spinach pottage.  Actually, that should be a tshirt, huh?  Isa went to Vegan MoFo, and all I got was leftover lentil pottage.
